Ruby

The following interview took place between Victoria and Ruby’s daughter-in-law and primary caregiver, Tiffani Carroll.

VICTORIA: Tell us a little about Mrs. Ruby.

TIFFANI: Mrs. Ruby was born in Hammond in 1931. She got married, had 5 children, and then worked for Lallie Kemp Hospital before transitioning to the Hammond Health Unit until she retired in 1993. Ms. Ruby enjoyed sewing, going on vacation, and working in her flower beds.

VICTORIA: When was she formally diagnosed?

TIFFANI: We were told she had dementia in 2018.

VICTORIA: How long did she present symptoms before she was diagnosed?

TIFFANI: We noticed symptoms about 6 months.

VICTORIA: What has been the most difficult to handle since diagnosis?

TIFFANI: Seeing her forgetting small things and now occasionally not recognizing who people are.

VICTORIA: What has been a silver lining, comical relief, or funny occurrence since her diagnosis?

TIFFANI: Fortunately, she has always been funny and we’re so happy to see her humor is still in tact

VICTORIA: How old is Mrs. Ruby at the time of this photoshoot?

TIFFANI: 91.

VICTORIA: What is the significance of the props in her photographs?

TIFFANI: These were her time out boy and girl dolls. She handmade them and always called them her “time out babies”

VICTORIA: What are your thoughts on how Mrs. Ruby responded to the shoot?

TIFFANI: She really enjoyed smiling for the camera. She has always enjoyed taking pictures of others and on vacation.

VICTORIA: What advice would you give to a family member at the beginning of their diagnosis journey with a loved one?

TIFFANI: Spend as much time and love on them as much as you can. Time is precious.

VICTORIA: What is Mrs. Ruby’s lasting legacy?

TIFFANI: There is always a reason to smile and a mother’s love. Since I’ve known her for 33 years, she is most proud of her kids and being their mom.
