Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is “Their Legacy Remains”?

Their Legacy Remains (TLR) is a dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease awareness campaign utilizing portrait photography and interviews to highlight the identity that remains intact regardless of the point in disease process they are in.

  • What does it cost to be a participant in TLR?

There is no cost to be interviewed and photographed for the TLR website.

  • Can I purchase photos of my loved one?

Absolutely! Cole Michael Photography has single image and package options for purchase at his cost. For more information click here.

  • How often do you host photoshoots?

Cole and Victoria host a full day of mini session interviews/photoshoots one day every 3 months.

  • How long does it take to participate?

Every participant is different. What’s important to us is they are comfortable with us and that we are capturing their authentic selves. Some participants have completed their session in as little as 3 minutes and others take upwards of 30 minutes, though most sessions are 10-15 minutes in length.

  • What does my loved one wear for the photoshoot?

We ask that participants dress in clothing signifying their career/legacy (lab coat, hard hat, apron, smock, etc), important clothing ( sentimental pieces, favorite colors, or nostalgic items), or whatever is most comfortable for them.

  • My loved one didn’t work outside of the home. Can they still participate?

Of course! Participants in the past have brought family portraits, homemade clothing/quilts, or cooking props for their shoots.

  • What are examples of props others have brought?

Meaningful jewelry, textbooks, small pets, framed portraits of spouses/parents/grandchildren, hair rollers, rolling pins, aprons, university jerseys/ flags, typewriter, paintings/artwork, dolls, mixing bowls, stethoscopes, model airplanes/cars, taxidermy, fishing gear, sports equipment, souvenirs, plaques, trophies, certificates, instruments, hats, broaches, dance shoes, et cetera.

  • Can I or my family be in the photographs?

While the intention of this project is to capture the participants, we also recognize the opportunity for families to capture a high quality portrait. We ask family who wish to have a photo with the participant wait until end of their session. Due to backdrop space limitations, we can accommodate a maximum of 2 additional people in the photo.

  • Who can come to the photoshoot session?

Participant comfort is the utmost importance. Please remain mindful of this when deciding who will be in attendance for their photoshoot as extra people and sounds often can be overwhelming for our participants. However, we welcome any and all who wish to be in attendance.

  • When will my loved one be featured on the website?

We feature a new participant each week. TLR will email the participant’s family the week before their loved one is featured so they may be able to keep an eye out.

  • Can you photograph my loved one at their home?

At this time, TLR is an entirely free awareness campaign and only able to accommodate portrait sessions hosted at the designated shoot location. However, if you are interested in booking Cole Michael Photography to capture photos of your loved one in their own environment, you can find more information here.

  • Can I donate to the cause?

Absolutely! While TLR is in its infancy, we do not directly accept funds, however we happily refer to local and national entities that support those living with dementia and their families.
